COMPREHEND? A WORK IN PROGRESS

February 21st, 2007

These are the things that good and ineffective readers do. What do you do?

Proficient Readers

Ineffective Readers

Before Reading

  • Understand that reading is a process to make meaning.

  • Build up their background knowledge on the subject before they begin to read.

  • Use their background knowledge as they read.

  • Know their purpose for reading.

  • Strive for fluency (conversational-like reading).
  • Think of reading only as decoding–one word at a time.

  • Do not expect reading to make sense.

  • Start reading without thinking about the topic, the language, or the structure of the text.

  • Do not know why they are reading.

During
Reading

  • Give their complete attention to the reading task.

  • Keep a constant check on their own understanding.

  • Adjust their reading rate to match purpose and reading material.

  • Monitor their reading comprehension and do it so often it becomes automatic.

  • Can match their reading strategies to a variety of reading materials.

  • Stop only to use a fix-up strategy when they do not understand.
  • Do not know whether they understand or do not understand.

  • Do not understand the concept of varying reading rates.

  • Do not monitor their own comprehension.

  • Lose their place often.

  • Seldom use any of the fix-up strategies.

  • They do not self-monitor: Asking does what I just read make sense, sound right, and look right?

After
Reading

  • Decide if they have achieved their goal for reading.

  • Respond personally and critically to what they read by making connections text/self; text/text; or text/real world.

  • Evaluate their own comprehension of what they read.

  • Summarize the major ideas.

  • Seek additional information from outside sources.

  • Ask questions.
  • Do not know what they have read.

  • Are unable to respond critically to what they have read, although they may have a limited personal response.

  • Do not follow reading with comprehension self-check.

    For 1) Inference Skills, I got 4/6

  2.   Joshua says:

    For 1) Inference Skills, i got 4/6

  3.   Gary says:

    For 1)Inference Skills, I got 6/6.

  4.   MinChih says:

I had 83% for the first excercise, which means i had 5/6. This exercise was relatively hard as i had not come across such a text for comprehension before. But when i visualized everything (with help from the graph), it all became alot more clearer.

  5.   Norman says:

For the inference skills i got 4/6

  6.   Gary says:

    For 2)Inference Skills-Reteaching, I got a perfect score.

  7.   Jazlene says:

    For 1) Inference Skills, I got 6/6.

  8.   Cherie says:

I acheived 6/6!!!!! for the first test. At first. thought that it would be about complicating statistics but after learning how to understand the text, I found it quite easy to digest.

  9.   An Yan says:

the first passage was quite hard to understand because I have no idea what all these grade inflations and dunnowhats are. I got an ‘embarressingly low’ result of 3 right 3 wrong, but I suppose I had to make the most of what ever I could understand, though it was all greek to me.

  10.   Joshua says:

I got a perfect score for the second excercise

  11.   Darren Lee says:

What up with that for inference skills-reteaching i got a perfect score. I answered the first question my accident

  12.   Norman says:

I got a perfect score for the 2nd one

  13.   Cherie says:

I got a perfect score this time for the second test.

  14.   An Yan says:

for the second excercise, i got them all right. This one is a piece of CAKE!

  15.   MinChih says:

I got full marks for the second assignment. The second assignment was quite interesting as it wasn’t a close passage, but it still tested us on whether we could gather information from the context. But the only fault i find is in the answering system. I couldn’t answer one of the questions at first as when i used my mouse to move up and down and let it go in the box meant to be the answer, it took that as the answer immediately without waiting for me to confirm.

  16.   Shawn Lim says:

For the Inference Skills, i got 3/6, while for the second excercise, i got a perfect score, and i got 13/15 for the third

  17.   Gary says:

or 3)Inference Quiz, i got 13/15 only as I made a few careless mistakes.

  18.   Jazlene says:

For 2) Inference Skills-Reteaching, I got 4/4… but i did not even read the 3rd question and when i scrolled down, i ended up getting it correct.

  19.   Cherie says:

I got a perfect score for the third test as well.

  20.   Joshua says:

I got full marks for the 3rd excrcise.

  21.   Darren Lee says:

I got all correct on 3) Inference Quiz

  22.   Gary says:

    For 4)Romulus and Remus(MCQ), I got 100% which is 3/3.

  23.   Norman says:

I got a perfect score for the third one. It was quite easy

  24.   An Yan says:

I got the last one all right. Pretty easy, if you ask me.

  25.   Darren Lee says:

Oh yea all correct on the fourth MCQ thingy

  26.   Jazlene says:

For the third test, i got 15/15… but the other options were quite off…

  27.   Norman says:

All right for the 4th test!

  28.   Joshua says:

i got full marks for the 4th MCQ compre.

  29.   An Yan says:

i finished the third one in one minute 20 seconds. and got them all right.

  30.   Cherie says:

I got full marks for the Romulus and Remus exercise.

  31.   Gary says:

    For 5)Cultural Shock, I got 100%, which is 5/5.

  32.   MinChih says:

I got exercise 3 and 4 all correct. And i am only posting my results for question 3 now because the computer said i was posting my comments too quickly…

  33.   Cherie says:

I got a perfect score for Culture Shock exercise.

  34.   Darren Lee says:

I got 5/5 for Culture Shock

  35.   Jazlene says:

For the fourth test, i got 3/3.

  36.   An Yan says:

The fourth one is quite easy, though i wasn’t so sure about the first one. I got that wrong first, then i redid it, and got it right.

  37.   Gary says:

    For 6)Pulp Friction, i got 90% which is 9/10.

  38.   An Yan says:

previous comment, mistake. I did the fifth one.

  39.   Joshua says:

Got full marks for the 5th excercise; almost ran out out time

  40.   Joel says:

These are the scores for the exercises:
    First test: 5/6
    Second test: 4/4
    Third test: 14/15
    Fourth test: 3/3
    Fifth test: 8/10

  41.   Shawn Lim says:

i got full marks for the fourth and fifth exercise and 75% for section six.

  42.   Yu Teng says:

    Inference Skills- 6/6
    Inference Skills- Reteaching- 1/1
    Inference Quiz- 15/15
    Romulus and Remus- 3/3
    Cultural Shock- 6/6
    Pulp Friction- 10/10

I find the last one, Pulp Friction harder than the others, as you really have to read carefully to understand it or find the answers. The others were quite easy, as compared to the last one.

  43.   Zi Bing says:

    Inference Skills- 6/6
    Inference Skills- Reteaching- 1/1
    Inference Quiz- 15/15
    Romulus & Remus (MCQ)- 3/3
    Cultural Shock (MCQ)- 6/6
    Pulp Friction- 10/10

I found most of the questions easy, except for one question in Pulp Friction, which I almost got wrong as the answers were all in order in the comprehension passage, except for that question.

  44.   Norman says:

i got 9/10 for pulp friction.

  45.   Sean says:

    First test: 4/6
    Second test: 4/4
    Third test: 15/15
    Fourth test: 3/3
    Fifth test: 8/10

  46.   Nicholas says:

    My Scores:

    1st test: 4/6
    2nd test: 4/4
    3rd test: 15/15
    4th test: 2/3
    5th test: 5/6
    6th test: 8/10

  47.   Jazlene says:

For the cultural shock one, i got 5/5.
Min Chih: I got the posting commments too quickly 4 time already!!

  48.   Shawn Lim says:

The first one was the most difficult of all…, i didn’t quite understand the passage, as i have no prior knowledge about it.

  49.   Sean says:

    sixth test: 8/10

  50.   Cherie says:

I acheived a perfect score for pulp friction. This passage was quite difficult because the answers were not very direct and we need inferencing skills. Futhermore, this passage was difficult to visualise as the whole passage was just about the growth and banning of a type of plant which is related to another plant which could produce drugs.

  51.   Darren Lee says:

For the pulp friction excercise i got 90% which is 9/10 supposedly

  52.   Shawn Lim says:

for the thrid, fourth and fifth passage, i think they are the easiest… the thrid passage only requires some common sense.

  53.   Joshua says:

ARGH, i got 83% for last excercise

  54.   Samuel says:

    1:5/6
    2:6/6
    3:15/15
    4:3/3
    5:6/6
    6:8/10

  55.   MinChih says:

I got all correct for the fifth exercise, and i got 90% for the last one…

  56.   An Yan says:

For the last one, I got all right.

  57.   Shawn Lim says:

    1)3/6
    2)4/4
