These are the things that good and ineffective readers do. What do you do?
|
Proficient Readers
|
Ineffective Readers
|
|
Before Reading
|
- Understand that reading is a process to make meaning.
- Build up their background knowledge on the subject before they begin to read.
- Use their background knowledge as they read.
- Know their purpose for reading.
- Strive for fluency (conversational-like reading).
|
- Think of reading only as decoding–one word at a time.
- Do not expect reading to make sense.
- Start reading without thinking about the topic, the language, or the structure of the text.
- Do not know why they are reading.
|
|
During
Reading |
- Give their complete attention to the reading task.
- Keep a constant check on their own understanding.
- Adjust their reading rate to match purpose and reading material.
- Monitor their reading comprehension and do it so often it becomes automatic.
- Can match their reading strategies to a variety of reading materials.
- Stop only to use a fix-up strategy when they do not understand.
|
- Do not know whether they understand or do not understand.
- Do not understand the concept of varying reading rates.
- Do not monitor their own comprehension.
- Seldom use any of the fix-up strategies.
- They do not self-monitor: Asking does what I just read make sense, sound right, and look right?
|
|
After
Reading |
- Decide if they have achieved their goal for reading.
- Respond personally and critically to what they read by making connections text/self; text/text; or text/real world.
- Evaluate their own comprehension of what they read.
- Summarize the major ideas.
- Seek additional information from outside sources.
|
- Do not know what they have read.
- Are unable to respond critically to what they have read, although they may have a limited personal response.
- Do not follow reading with comprehension self-check.

For 1)Inference Skills, I got 6/6.
February 21st, 2007 at 8:08 pm
I had 83% for the first excercise, which means i had 5/6. This exercise was relatively hard as i had not come across such a text for comprehension before. But when i visualized everything (with help from the graph), it all became alot more clearer.
February 21st, 2007 at 8:09 pm
For the inference skills i got 4/6
February 21st, 2007 at 8:09 pm

For 1) Inference Skills, I got 6/6.
February 21st, 2007 at 8:10 pm
I acheived 6/6!!!!! for the first test. At first. thought that it would be about complicating statistics but after learning how to understand the text, I found it quite easy to digest.
February 21st, 2007 at 8:10 pm
the first passage was quite hard to understand because I have no idea what all these grade inflations and dunnowhats are. I got an ‘embarressingly low’ result of 3 right 3 wrong, but I suppose I had to make the most of what ever I could understand, though it was all greek to me.
February 21st, 2007 at 8:11 pm
I got a perfect score for the second excercise
February 21st, 2007 at 8:11 pm
What up with that for inference skills-reteaching i got a perfect score. I answered the first question my accident

February 21st, 2007 at 8:13 pm
for the second excercise, i got them all right. This one is a piece of CAKE!
February 21st, 2007 at 8:13 pm
I got full marks for the second assignment. The second assignment was quite interesting as it wasn’t a close passage, but it still tested us on whether we could gather information from the context. But the only fault i find is in the answering system. I couldn’t answer one of the questions at first as when i used my mouse to move up and down and let it go in the box meant to be the answer, it took that as the answer immediately without waiting for me to confirm.
February 21st, 2007 at 8:14 pm
For the Inference Skills, i got 3/6, while for the second excercise, i got a perfect score, and i got 13/15 for the third
February 21st, 2007 at 8:14 pm
or 3)Inference Quiz, i got 13/15 only as I made a few careless mistakes.
February 21st, 2007 at 8:14 pm
For 2) Inference Skills-Reteaching, I got 4/4… but i did not even read the 3rd question and when i scrolled down, i ended up getting it correct.
February 21st, 2007 at 8:15 pm
I got a perfect score for the third test as well.
February 21st, 2007 at 8:15 pm

February 21st, 2007 at 8:24 pm
For the fourth test, i got 3/3.
February 21st, 2007 at 8:25 pm
The fourth one is quite easy, though i wasn’t so sure about the first one. I got that wrong first, then i redid it, and got it right.
February 21st, 2007 at 8:26 pm
For 6)Pulp Friction, i got 90% which is 9/10.
February 21st, 2007 at 8:26 pm

Inference Skills- 6/6
Inference Skills- Reteaching- 1/1
Inference Quiz- 15/15
Romulus and Remus- 3/3
Cultural Shock- 6/6
Pulp Friction- 10/10
I find the last one, Pulp Friction harder than the others, as you really have to read carefully to understand it or find the answers. The others were quite easy, as compared to the last one.
February 21st, 2007 at 8:28 pm
Inference Skills- 6/6
Inference Skills- Reteaching- 1/1
Inference Quiz- 15/15
Romulus & Remus (MCQ)- 3/3
Cultural Shock (MCQ)- 6/6
Pulp Friction- 10/10
I found most of the questions easy, except for one question in Pulp Friction, which I almost got wrong as the answers were all in order in the comprehension passage, except for that question.
February 21st, 2007 at 8:28 pm
i got 9/10 for pulp friction.

Min Chih: I got the posting commments too quickly 4 time already!!
February 21st, 2007 at 8:30 pm
The first one was the most difficult of all…, i didn’t quite understand the passage, as i have no prior knowledge about it.
February 21st, 2007 at 8:30 pm
sixth test: 8/10
February 21st, 2007 at 8:31 pm
I acheived a perfect score for pulp friction. This passage was quite difficult because the answers were not very direct and we need inferencing skills. Futhermore, this passage was difficult to visualise as the whole passage was just about the growth and banning of a type of plant which is related to another plant which could produce drugs.
February 21st, 2007 at 8:31 pm
For the pulp friction excercise i got 90% which is 9/10 supposedly
February 21st, 2007 at 8:32 pm
for the thrid, fourth and fifth passage, i think they are the easiest… the thrid passage only requires some common sense.

In my opinion, I felt that the passage titled “Pulp Friction” was the most challenging as the passage was solely about the logging of trees and what some governments have done. Another passage which I found quite tricky was the one on inference skills.
February 22nd, 2007 at 4:46 am
I felt that the Inference Skills was a little tricky and so was Pulp Friction, but Inference Skills- Reteaching was a little simple.
